I’ve updated my list of the most common mistakes I believe women make when preparing for a Boudoir Session…or when preparing to even consider the possibility of one. Wherever you may be in the process, this is for you…. xoxo
1. MOST WOMEN ARE AFRAID THAT THEY WON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEIR BODIES
So just go ahead and cut yourself some slack on this one because unless you are a professional model or dancer, you are not going to know what to do with your body. This is the photographer’s job. She/he should know how to coach you through body movements, poses and facial expressions. You will be amazed by how easy it actually is when someone with experience is guiding you through the process. Check out the blog post I wrote, On Posing, Fear and Yoga, for a bit more on this topic.
Well, let me tell you that 99% of the women I photograph are definitely crazy nervous before their photo shoot. In fact, I might be a little concerned if they weren’t! It’s a pretty big deal to get in front of a camera, period…but even more so in one’s undies or less! But look, those butterflies are not only an indication of how important this experience is, but those flutters also bring to light that individual vulnerabilities are being faced and embraced…and that, my friends, is a beautiful thing.
3. SOME WOMEN FEEL LIKE THEY NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE THEIR PHOTO SHOOT
Curves are beautiful! However, if this is a concern of yours, then this is where an experienced photographer will step in and lead the way. She/he should know how to make you look your very best through the use of lighting, posing and wardrobe. After all, the ultimate goal here is to show you how amazingly beautiful you are right now, just as you are.
4. MOST WOMEN HAVE A NASTY LITTLE HABIT OF COMPARING THEMSELVES TO OTHER WOMEN
Here’s the truth, ladies: celebrating that you are THE ONE AND ONLY YOU is liberating. There is freedom in surrendering and accepting yourself as you are right now. You might find comfort in this very personal blog post about my own journey with self image and photography. I get it, I really do.
5. A LOT OF WOMEN TEND TO STRESS THEMSELVES OUT OVER WHAT TO WEAR
It is definitely the photographer’s responsibility to help you prepare your wardrobe. I believe that a photo session is a creative collaboration between the artist and the client. There must be a meaningful conversation well before the day of the shoot that addresses your vision for your final images as well as any concerns you may have. Wardrobe planning should be fun and creative! I want you to enjoy thinking about and shopping for outfits, not stressing over it! 6. SOME WOMEN DON’T USE THEIR PHOTO SHOOT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TREAT THEMSELVES
There are so many ways that women can take advantage of this special occasion from a fresh haircut and color, a manicure & pedicure, a massage, a full blown spa day, a shopping trip to a date night with your partner/girlfriends the evening after your session (because you will look fabulous). I mean really, how often will you be planning a photo shoot for yourself? By all means, live it up!
7. MOST WOMEN FEEL GUILTY ABOUT SPENDING MONEY ON THEMSELVES
As a divorced Mother of three kiddos, I get it. I really do. That’s why I’ve tried to make this kind of investment in yourself ah-mazing by providing an unforgettable experience that includes a full day dedicated to just you, images that show you what an absolute Goddess you actually are and ultimately, a major dose of self confidence; one that you will not only take with you, but re-live every time you look at your images. These pieces of the Beauty/Boudoir Photography experience are priceless. Period.
