If I had a dollar for every time someone told me “I’m awkward in photos,” I’d probably be answering this blog from a beach somewhere.
It’s easily the number one thing women say before booking a boudoir session in Asheville.
And honestly? I get it.
Most of us have spent years dodging cameras, hiding in the back of group photos, or doing that weird half-smile because we’re not sure what else to do with our faces. Somewhere along the way we decided we’re just “bad at photos.”
But here’s the truth most people don’t realize.
No one walks into a boudoir session already knowing what to do.
That’s not your job.
You don’t need to know your angles.
You don’t need to know what to do with your hands.
You don’t need to show up already feeling confident.
Your only job is to show up.
My job—as a boudoir photographer in Asheville—is to guide you.

Not in a stiff, “hold that pose for five minutes while I stare at you” kind of way. The kind of guidance that feels natural. Small adjustments. Gentle direction. A little conversation. A lot of reassurance.
Before long, something shifts.
Shoulders soften.
Your breathing slows.
You realize you’re not performing—you’re just existing in the moment.
And that’s when the magic usually happens.
Most Women Aren’t Awkward. They’re Just Under-Directed.
Here’s something I’ve learned after nearly two decades photographing women.
Awkwardness usually isn’t real.
What people call awkward is usually just standing in front of a camera without direction.
Imagine walking onto a dance floor with no music and no one telling you what to do. Of course it would feel strange.
Boudoir photography is no different.
When someone gently guides you—where to place your hands, how to turn your shoulders, when to breathe—it suddenly makes sense. What once felt intimidating starts to feel surprisingly comfortable.
Sometimes even fun.
And yes… occasionally a little empowering.
What a Boudoir Session in Asheville Actually Feels Like
Women often imagine boudoir sessions as intense or intimidating.
In reality, most sessions feel more like a calm afternoon than a performance.
There’s music playing.
We talk.
We laugh when something feels a little silly.
And slowly, without forcing anything, you start to see yourself differently.
Not through the lens of “Am I doing this right?”
But through the lens of “Oh… that’s actually me.”

The Truth About Confidence and Boudoir Photography
Here’s another secret.
Confidence rarely shows up before a session.
It usually shows up during it.
Somewhere between the first few photos and the moment you realize you’re doing just fine.
Sometimes it shows up when you see the images afterward and think:
“Wait… that’s really me?”
Be Honest for a Second
When you think about booking a boudoir photography session in Asheville, is one of your first thoughts:
“I’d probably be awkward.”
If it is, you’re not alone.
Almost every woman I photograph says the exact same thing beforehand.
And almost every one of them leaves saying something very different.
